      “Stillness Moves” workshop performances at MIT CAST

      Maya is the 2016–18 Mellon Distinguished Visiting Artist at the MIT Center for Art, Science & Technology (CAST). The culmination of her residency will be a workshop performance of “Three Parts Wisdom,” composed by Glenn Kotche from her album TranceClassical, along with music by Bach, Vivaldi and Hildegard Von Bingen. The works are deconstructed and reimagined in a reactive environment where lighting designs by Joshua Higgason of MIT Music & Theater Arts respond to and interact with her music.

      “Spinning” World Premiere at Peak Performances

      May 10-13, 2018

      Composer Julia Wolfe and cellist Maya Beiser honor the act of spinning thread in their new piece, which celebrates the essential handiwork performed by women to keep us warm and clothed for centuries. Here Wolfe and Beiser create a sonic universe that incorporates layers of recorded cello, accordion, percussion, singing and speaking, accompanied by multimedia projections and textiles by artist Laurie Olinder to illuminate and pay homage to the craft.
